Canadian Hockey Academies

There are tens of thousands of children in minor-hockey programs across Canada, but only a select few every year decide to step up their development and attend one of the growing number of hockey academies across the country.

There, they are completely immersed in the game, with daily practices integrated into their school day along with nutrition, fitness and training sessions to keep the aspiring athletes in tip-top shape.

The academies employ experienced coaches, academic tutors and often have access to first-rate facilities. The student-athletes are either billeted with host families in the community or housed in dormitories.

“Having the three key points in a player’s life ... integrated together with academics, athletics and character development, those are the principles we build our program on,” says Andy Oakes, president of Okanagan Hockey Academy in Penticton, B.C.

At Okanagan, athletes are in the classroom from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., then hit the ice, the weight room or do other training activities between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“We’re using the very productive mental hours of morning time when the players are refreshed and rested for academics, then we’re using good physical development time, being in the afternoon for their training time,” he says.

The big knock against hockey in general and hockey camps and academies in particular is the cost. Parents already have to scrape together money for registration fees, equipment and for elite players, hockey camps are not just a luxury, they are a requirement.

Academies, with annual tuition in the tens of thousands of dollars, add an entirely new level of cost.

“It’s an expensive program ... that unfortunately does not allow everyone to participate in it,” concedes Oakes, noting comparisons to soccer and football academies. “But in those fees is a very much increased service level for the athlete as an entire person.”

Mathieu Mault, an official with the Canadian International Hockey Academy in Rockland, just east of Ottawa, says his group plans to create an endowment fund to provide financial assistance to families of players in need.

Although hockey academies have been popular in Western Canada — Okanagan has about 100 students every year between Grades 9 and 12 and Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Sask., has a strong hockey program along with other athletics — there are fewer opportunities for young players in Eastern Canada to go to an academy close to home.

Hockey Canada Sanctioning Development Camps

Hockey Canada has approved a plan to set up pilot projects, as early as this fall, as a first step toward licensing and sanctioning skills development programs, camps and coaches.

“It was unanimous in the hockey development council meetings (on Friday in Montreal),” Corey McNabb, Hockey Canada’s manager of player development, said in a telephone interview. “The next step is to set criteria and guidelines.”

McNabb says all 13 branches of Hockey Canada, including the Ontario Hockey Federation, will have the chance to opt in:

“I expect some (branches) will be ready this fall, and by spring 2011 we should have full Hockey Canada skills development-approved programs.”

He adds that the plan is about more than regulating week-long hockey camps in the spring and summer. For example, goaltending and power skating programs and clinics that run year-round would also be affected.

“Those operators that want to be certified would go to their branch for approval and it would be forwarded to Hockey Canada and we would give approval nationally,” McNabb said. “I do feel it is long overdue.”

Proposed Delta Hockey Academy for preteens runs into Opposition

A Delta, BC Hockey Academy for budding young athletes in Grades 4-7 who want to improve their skills while also attending school could open as early as this fall as part of an effort in Delta to lure students from independent schools back into the public education system.

While fee-charging hockey academies are not unusual in B.C. secondary schools, district communications manager Kay Thody said the plan for one in a Delta elementary school -- as proposed by two officials with the Vancouver Giants hockey team -- appears to be unprecedented in the province, although Edmonton provides similar opportunities and Toronto is moving in the same direction.

Dale Saip, chairman of the Delta board of education and a Giants vice-president, said the district is trying to be innovative at a time of declining enrolments.

Some parents aren't pleased with the plan, partly because they heard about it via the hockey grapevine and have yet to receive any explanation from district officials about how it would benefit their school.

"We all felt quite blindsided," said Susanne McKinnon, chairwoman of the parent advisory council (PAC) at English Bluff school, which has been identified as a likely location for the academy.

Trustees have yet to approve the program, but the district says a September opening is possible, if parents are keen.

"It depends entirely on the community," Thody said in an interview. "No decisions have been made."

Delta has six sports academies in high schools -- with tuition fees ranging from $135 a month for hockey to $450 a month for golf. Delta has announced the opening of a seventh high school academy at South Delta secondary this fall for students interested in film acting.

Hockey Camp puts Kids on Ice

Businesses, organizations and school board come together to give students a chance to lace up.

The hockey camp for 60 Grade 5 students from 24 schools hit the ice Jan. 8 and runs for six weeks. For many, it's their first time lacing up.

Donors contributed all the camp's equipment - Regent Park Community School, Duke's Source For Sports, Sher-Wood Hockey (new sticks) through the Upper Canada Patriots and Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment.

Skating on an Olympic-sized rink is a rarity for Toronto kids. It is also great perspective if they watch Olympians take to the ice next month at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

TDSB superintendent Jim Spyropoulos and board chair Bruce Davis conceived the camp last summer to be a recipient of some of the 500 hours per year the board enjoys at the new MasterCard Centre.

Edge of Excellence
At the Edge of Excellence Hockey Camps, our entire program is specifically directed at improving skaters in all of these areas. Players are also educated on ways that they can, prior to attending the camp (through our off-ice training program) and following the camp, continue to make further gains and reinforce changes in these areas. We limit each group on the ice to 30 players with 4 to 6 instructors on the ice. The ratio of player to instructor is, therefore, approximately seven to one. Kelowna, Winnipeg.
